What rekeying changes
Rekeying changes the working key of a compatible lock cylinder. It does not replace the entire lock or automatically fix worn hardware, door alignment or a damaged mechanism. It can be useful after moving, losing track of a key or changing who needs access to a property.
Compatibility determines the options
Not all locks can be combined under one key. The brand, keyway, cylinder type and hardware condition matter. Tell us how many doors and locks are involved, whether current keys are available and whether you want matching-key operation. A photograph of the outside hardware may be useful, but it cannot settle every compatibility question.
Rekeying is not always the right choice
A broken cylinder, badly worn mechanism or desired change in hardware may make replacement more appropriate. Some electronic and specialty locks require a different procedure. Review rekeying versus replacement before deciding which outcome you want.
What affects the scope
The number of cylinders, access to the property, whether keys are available and the condition of the hardware affect the work. Ask for the estimate basis, any service-call fee and what is included. Do not rely on a generic online starting price as a complete quote.
