Moved into a new home? A practical lock checklist

Make an access inventory first

Before buying new hardware, list the doors and locks you actually use. Include the main entry, garage-entry door, side or back doors and any separately keyed storage areas. Note which keys you received and whether each key operates the lock smoothly. A clear inventory makes the next conversation more useful.

Decide who should have access

A move can leave uncertainty about who has copies of the old keys. Discuss whether compatible locks can be rekeyed or whether the hardware itself needs replacement. For a rented home, check with the owner or property manager before arranging changes.

Look at the door as well as the lock

Close each door normally and observe whether it latches and locks without lifting, pushing or pulling it into place. Note loose handles, worn parts or a key that feels hard to turn. Do not force a stiff mechanism; describe the symptom so it can be assessed.

Check connected and keypad products

If the property has smart locks, read the product’s transfer and reset guidance and confirm who controls the account. Do not assume that changing a physical key also removes digital access. Handle account details and entry codes through the product’s secure setup procedures, and keep them private.

Prepare a short work list

  • Number and type of locks to be assessed.
  • Whether the goal is new keys, hardware repair or an upgrade.
  • Whether several doors should use one key.
  • Who may authorize the work and will be present.
  • Any parts or smart-lock models already selected.
