Describe what the lock is doing
Does the key resist turning, does the latch miss the strike, or does the door need to be lifted before it locks? Tell us when the problem happens and whether the lock works with the door open. These observations can help distinguish a lock mechanism problem from a door or alignment issue.
A matching appearance is not enough
Backset, door thickness, bore dimensions, latch or bolt type and the existing preparation all matter. Commercial and residential hardware can have different requirements. Keep packaging and model details if you have already bought a lock, and ask about compatibility before opening or altering it.
When a key change is the real goal
If the lock is sound and the main concern is who has copies of the key, rekeying may be worth discussing. If the hardware is worn, damaged or no longer suited to the door, replacement may be the more relevant request.
Help prepare the visit
Share the type of property, number of affected doors and any clear photos of the hardware. Confirm who may authorize work. Keep access codes, security-system credentials and identity documents private. Ask which authorization records to have available in person.
