Rekeying a rental property can change which keys operate compatible existing locks without replacing all the hardware. At a turnover, the useful question is not simply how many keys were returned. It is which doors are involved, whether access can be changed as requested, who can approve the work and how the new keys will reach the right people.
This is a planning guide for an authorized turnover. Lease terms, building rules and any applicable legal requirements need to be handled through the owner or property manager and qualified advice when needed. Do not treat a locksmith appointment as authorization to change an occupied tenant’s access.
Confirm who may authorize the change
Identify the owner or manager who can approve the work and the person who will be present. If the unit is in a managed building, establish whether a shared key system or building-controlled hardware is involved. An individual unit request should not accidentally interfere with access managed for the wider property.
Agree on when the work may happen and how the locksmith will gain authorized access. If cleaners, maintenance staff or another contractor need entry around the same time, plan their access with the manager. Avoid changing keys halfway through an uncoordinated handover.
Inventory the affected doors
Count the cylinders and identify their locations in a private record. A front entrance, side door and detached storage area may not use compatible hardware. Note the brand or model when known, whether keys are available, and any sticking, damage or loose parts.
Do not assume that every lock can share one new key. The keyway and cylinder design need checking. If several doors already belong to a managed or master key system, explain that before the visit rather than treating them as unrelated household locks.
Separate key control from hardware condition
Rekeying concerns which key works. It does not repair a worn latch, a damaged cylinder or a door that does not close properly. Describe those faults separately so the proposed scope can include assessment where needed.
A lock in good condition may be a candidate for rekeying. Hardware with a mechanical problem may need repair or replacement. Ask which recommendation relates to access control and which relates to the door’s operation. This makes it easier to compare estimates without assuming that new hardware is always necessary.
Agree on the new key arrangement
Decide which doors should share a key and whether any doors should remain separate. Then specify the number of keys needed for the tenant, authorized manager and any agreed backup arrangement. A clear plan prevents accidental gaps such as providing enough copies for the tenant but none for the authorized handover contact.
Record who receives each key and when. Keep the record private; it does not need photographs of readable key cuts or public labels identifying an exact address. For an electronic lock, arrange account ownership and user-code changes separately from any work on its mechanical backup cylinder.
Check the handover before closing the job
Test each agreed key at each affected door with the technician. Confirm that the intended doors are included and that locks operate normally. Ask how the previous keys have been affected by the agreed work, rather than assuming every key on the property has been addressed.
Retain the invoice or work record with the door list and the approved scope. Give the new tenant or manager clear information about which key belongs to which authorized use. If a fault remains outside the locksmith’s scope, record it so it does not disappear between contractors.
Arrange the visit with the property details
For rental-property lock help, provide the city, lock count, planned turnover timing and authorized contact. Ask about applicable visit, labor, parts and extra-key charges. Keep lease documents and identity records secure for any agreed authorization check, and keep access codes private.
