Rekeying vs. replacing locks: how to choose

Start with the result you need

The most useful first question is not which option sounds cheaper. It is what you want to change. If the hardware works and you want old keys to stop working, rekeying may be relevant. If you want different hardware, need to address a damaged mechanism or want another feature, replacement may be the right discussion.

What rekeying does

Rekeying changes the key that operates a compatible cylinder. The main lock hardware stays in place. It does not automatically repair a sagging door, a worn latch, damage to the frame or an incompatible lock. Keeping those jobs separate helps avoid expecting one procedure to solve several problems.

When replacement enters the conversation

Hardware that is damaged, badly worn or unsuitable for the door may need replacement. You might also want a different finish, a keypad or another way to manage access. A replacement must fit the door preparation and the intended use; matching the appearance of the old lock is not enough.

Several locks and one key

If you want multiple doors to share a key, ask about compatibility. Different keyways and cylinder types may prevent a simple matching-key arrangement. Count the locks and note which keys currently work. Photos and model information can help begin the conversation, but an actual inspection may still be needed.

Questions to ask

  • Is the existing hardware suitable for rekeying?
  • Would replacement address a problem that rekeying would leave unresolved?
  • Can the relevant locks work with the same key?
  • What labor, parts and service-call fees are included in the estimate?
